The mission of Raven Homeschool, in conjunction with the Yukon-Koyukuk School District, is to provide support to parents so that they can prepare their children to become life-long learners, problem-solvers, and contributing members of their family, community, and society by providing meaningful experiences that create understanding of their cultural heritage and the technological world.
We are committed to maintaining a high quality program that encompasses the best elements of individualized education and meets the needs of all students. We support the role of parents in educating their children. We will continue to provide educational choice that includes academically sound curriculum and extra-curricular programs to produce independent learners who will become contributing members of society.
The History of Raven
Raven Homeschool is a state-wide correspondence school operated by the Yukon-Koyukuk School District (YKSD), with offices located in Fairbanks, Delta Junction, Anchorage, Wasilla, and Juneau.
Homeschooling has been around for a long time in the YKSD. It all began back in the late 1970’s with a school called “Northwind”. Northwind was created to support homeschooling families within the school district’s boundaries. Geographically, Northwind School served families in an area larger than any state east of the Mississippi (66,000 sq. miles). At that time most of the families served through Northwind lived remotely. It was these early beginnings where we honed our skills on how best to serve homeschooling families. We started with Calvert Curriculum (school in a box) and soon moved to designing specialized courses to meet the unique needs of the students in Northwind. The daily instruction was provided by the parents who had the support of their YKSD Advisory Teacher. Northwind had its own Parent Advisory Council and in 1993 Northwind School was accredited through the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC) along with the rest of YKSD schools. Northwind served hundreds of families over its lifetime but was eventually closed its doors and a few years later was replaced by a new program designed to serve families both inside the school district boundaries as well as throughout Alaska. The new program would soon be known as “Raven”.
The Raven School opened in 2002 after meeting with a group of interested families in Fairbanks. Its enrollment the first year was nearly 500 students. Like with Northwind School before, YKSD put great emphasis on supporting the homeschooling parents and customizing the education to best meet the needs of each child. Each family was given an advisory teacher. The advisory teachers (all Alaskan certified) were trained to assist the parent in meeting the needs of their child(ren). The program continued to grow and new offices were brought on line to bring the support closer to the families being served. Over its lifetime, Raven has served thousands of families all over Alaska. Our network of support assures the highest quality education to the families and children we serve. It is what has made Raven a leading homeschooling program in Alaska today.
We are proud to maintain high standards of excellence and International Accreditation with AdvancED.
